2009 FALL Inspirational Sewing
Did you know that SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SEWING MONTH?
It is the beginning of a very short season--before you know it it’s time for the Thanksgiving!
Our Fall classes begin very soon, many of them are not repeated due to the limited space: so now is the time to check out our fall class schedule! The following is a more detailed view of what’s happening with our classes, whether it’s a class for you, and what you will be learning.
Starting with our BEGINNER SEWING CLASSES. This may be called a beginner sewing class but it’s not just for beginners. There is no sewing experience necessary (not even on the sewing machine). But also this class is perfect for someone who has had some sewing experience but has never taught professionally. Many people have learned on their own just by using patterns and been frustrated by the fitting. The main emphasis in all of our classes is getting the garments to fit. This beginner class goes over how to measure to get the correct bust size, hip and length. The sewing covers how to finish off a neckline easily, how to set in a sleeve and put up a hem all at the same time of learning how to sew with knits. The second garment is either an soft a-line, bias cut or straight skirt. You will be learning how to sew in elastic so that it does not roll and has the perfect amount of stretch. You will be learning how to use a double needle as well as fusing up quick hems. You will not have to bring your machine because we provide them for you (that’s why class is limited). This also gives someone the experience of sewing before they purchase a machine because most sewing is done in class. You will also have some sewing experience on using a serger. Fabric is purchased in the first class as well as notions that you might not have at home. Most of the success of sewing is using the right kind of fabric. We have may instructors who teach this series for us because we offer so many (our most popular class!). Our instructors all have an incredible backgrounds but still love teaching our new sewers.
Our follow-up series to our Beginner Series are the classes that are offered individually. There is the PANTS CLASS in which you learn how to measure properly for the seat depth, length, hip and waist. Since the emphasis is on getting the pants to fit we start with simple pull-on pants. In the second class you will be individually fitted so that you will have a master pattern that can be used an infinite amount of times.
In a follow-up class you will learn how to insert a ZIPPER and POCKET for tailored pants or a skirt.
In the next step to becoming a confident sew-er we offer a BLOUSE or JACKET class. In this series you will learn how to make a collar that lies flat and set in perfect sleeves. Either of these techniques are used on cardigan jackets or blouses which can be worn as over-blouses.
There are many options after this point or you can switch to another field of sewing. For this season we have:
TRAVEL BAG for something fun. Knowledge of your sewing machine is necessary but not a lot of experience. A tote bag is easy but what you do to it is creative. You can choose from many patterns but you will learn the basics in class. Measuring for that perfect bag that will even hold your groceries or lap top. Interfacing for the support that you will need as well as adding straps to your perfect length that will hang over your shoulder. You will learn the basics of adding bias trim, piping and making as many pockets on the inside or the outside of your bag as well as zippered matching pouches or eye glass cases. This is a fun class that allows your creativity to take off.
For the expert sewer “wanna-be” we offer only one advanced class for the season in making a COAT. You may choose any coat style you wish but you will be taught how to interface (for body), interline (for warmth) and line (for beauty). You will learn new sewing techniques such as making a welt pocket or patch pocket and making bound buttonholes. For the less experienced sewer patch or in-seam pockets are easier and you can always make machine-made buttonholes or have them made. This is one of those special classes that Pat Headen will be teaching. Making the chosen garment is just the beginning of what is covered. Years are passing quickly—take advantage of her many years of sewing.
Going off in another direction we offer many classes in HOME DECORATING. Most are meant for people with minimum sewing experience since most of sewing for the home is based on measurements. There are very easy, yet fantastic, classes that can put your home together. The key is choosing fabric that is exciting. For the new sew-er start with a PILLOW CLASS. The basics are shown—how to measure, center a pattern and then add decorative trim with piping or fringe. This is a lecture class but if enough people request it we can schedule a sit and sew the following week.
We go on to offering a basic CURTAIN CLASS which will include how to measure, press up perfect hems, sew a header or even easy pleats using pleater tape.
VALANCES are the next fun home decorating project that you can do. We will show you how to use the wonderful Styrofoam valence kits that require NO SEWING. Of course we will cover the measuring and different options to make it look like it was professionally sewn. There’s no need for a sewing machine for this project—just some glue and pins!
Everyone admires all the beautiful quilts we have hanging in our store as well as the inspirational books that are available. Don’t be intimidated! Quilting is just cutting up large pieces of fabric and sewing them back together. Some experience at the machine is necessary. These classes are sit and sew but, of course, there is homework so a machine in good working order is a must.
We start with our BEGINNER QUILTING SERIES. In this class you will learn to use a rotary cutter (no tedious scissor cutting) for your first experience in quilting. There is a choice of patterns using simple strip quilting techniques. You will be given guidance on how to choose your fabric, how to sew straight and put your special quilt together. You have a choice of sizes but we recommend a lap quilt size to get that first feeling of accomplishment.
Our quilting classes go on to offer QUILT YOUR OWN PROJECT since you already are familiar with quilting techniques. This class offers you the confidence to pick whatever quilt you want and be inspired by what your classmates are making.
QUILT IN A DAY is not really in a day unless you sew 24 hours. This is our first class in making a whole bed quilt. It’s exciting, it’s fun and it really is fast considering that it’s a whole quilt. You choose your fabric before class and cut it into strips so that you can get right down to sewing in class. This class is open to anyone who has had a little quilting experience. The fun part is the end when everyone helps with the birthing of the quilt.
We offer many more advanced quilting classes such as NEW YORK BEAUTIES and FEATHERED STAR. We just don’t get enough quilting. It’s a bug that is non-stoppable. For the more advanced classes, help is given in the first class for the very important part of choosing your fabric.
Who ever thought that we would be teaching knitting and crocheting? We have the nicest group of instructors that are willing to share their talents and love of needlecrafts. Our knitting "angel" Carmel is in the store on Thursdays and Saturdays to help with all your knitting questions. Carmel offers our knit or crochet YOUR OWN PROJECT to sit and needle with her on whatever project you would like to do.
BEGINNER KNITTING or CROCHET is for the absolute novice who has itchy fingers. You will be taught about the needles, how to read the information on the yarn, which yarn to pick and how to do the basic stitches. Basically there is knit and purl and how they are combined to do most of your knitting patterns. For crochet there are just a few basic stitches to learn. This is easy and fun.
To go on to your next project you can continue to KNITTING II which will be individually scheduled as a follow up to Beginner Knitting.
The meat of it is the BEGINNER SWEATER class. Now that you know the basic stitches lets make ribbing, learn to increase and decrease and shape a neckline and armhole. This is fine for anyone who has some knitting experience. You are all welcome.
SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS what fun! For the more adventurous knitting who wants to move on come learn all the tricks to making socks that really fit.
